500g / Info about Oakland Farm Butter: The milk comes from Farms who are all managed independently and are located in Riebeeck Kasteel, Malmesbury, Klipheuwel, Phillidelphia and Durbanville. Cows produce the BST hormone naturally in order to regulate their metabolic processes. Oakland milk does not contain rBST, which is a growth hormone that has been modified from the normal BST growth hormone using recombinant DNA. At Oakland we require all of our suppliers to sign a statement which clearly defines our terms that they are not to inject their herd with the rBST hormone to boost their milk production. In the Western Cape it is near impossible to allow one’s cattle herd to free range feed, because unlike farms in the Eastern Cape, we do not have the rainfall (and thus water supply) to provide them with ample/consistent feeding grounds. However, our suppliers do not keep their herds caged. They are kept in camps, with allocated shading structures that provide them respite from sun and rain, where they are allowed to move around freely and have easy access to food and water. Our suppliers mainly farm with Friesland cows. We test a sample of the raw milk (for the % butter fat amongst other criteria) before we accept a milk load from any of our suppliers. When we test for butter fat, we follow the guidelines of DAF, MilkSA and DSA, which states that the butter fat % on raw milk has to be more than 3.40%. We do not accept milk with a % less than this.
